spring/summer beauty trends

she steps speaks to makeup artist Amy-Lei Hammond about beauty trends and must have products for spring/summer 2018.

Red eyes

Beauty looks featuring red eyes have begun to pop up from fashion week behind the scene snapshots to editorials. Models on the runway for Brock Collection spring/summer 2018 donned subtle, red burnished eyelids to accompany floral dresses and lace skirts. A smudged, smokey red is easier for first steps into the trend. Writer Sophie Wirt spent a week playing with red eye looks to dive into the trend.

For a bold red, look to the internet for inspiration. Instagram provides the perfect space for makeup moguls and aficionados to display different ‘looks’. Red liner, lashes and eyeshadow all make an appearance. Hammond adds, “Let’s be honest, not everyone is this brave so you can gently smoke it out with a natural brown or even a gold in the centre, think Dubai sunset.”

Invisible kisses

Hammond exclaims, “nude lips are always in!” If you are uncertain as to what shade to go for, most makeup counters offer a service where a beauty advisor can help recommend a shade in respect of features including skin tone and eye colour. More of a digital person? Use Charlotte Tillbury’s Lipstick Finder for a quick fix. Hammond goes on to recommend nudes of choice, “Kiko have an incredible range of nudes for all undertones in their Smart range. You can dress it up with a Gerard Cosmetics metallic lipstick in the centre [of the lips] for an ombré effect.”

Set the tone

Setting sprays can be used for different purpose, but in this instance, the main goal is hydration. Hammond explains, “They help add a Spring Glow to a make up look without the oily look.” Setting sprays work well at enhancing colours and pigments applied to the face and also keeping a shiny face at bay. Hammond specifically recommends, “Gerard Cosmetics Slay All Day, MAC Fix+ and TooFaced 3 in 1; all work great for a dewy finish.”

Into the blue

“Blue liner on the water line has made a comeback, it’s literally everywhere!”, says Hammond. A favourite daring look by celebrities, the likes of Kim Kardashian, Jessica Biel and Rihanna have all sported blue liner. The blue can also make the whites of the eyes appear brighter. This article by Devon Abelman may be two years old, but it shows that trends go full circle and blue liner is now back in this exact same way.

Dewy skin

“A skincare trend that comes around every year is always natural looking, dewy skin” says Hammond. Fresh faced models with dewy skin runway looks were spotted at spring/summer 2018 shows including Isabel Marant, Louis Vuitton and Sacai. Hammond notes, “the skin had glow and the colour focus was mainly eyes.” She adds, “normal/combination skin? Try Fix+ from MAC before you start if you have normal to combination skin then apply Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Oil. The Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Shimmering Oil is gorgeous on darker skin tones. If you have oily skin like myself, grab Embryolisse Creme Concentrate (staple product) for moisture, allow a few minutes to penetrate, apply Urban Decay De-Slick, targetting oily areas, not all over. Spritz to control shine and add add to the dewy finish.”
